How to Cheat on Canvas Quizzes in 2026
Canvas by Instructure is the most widely used LMS in higher education. Understanding its monitoring capabilities is the first step to finding methods that still work in 2026.
What Canvas Can and Cannot Detect
Canvas itself has limited built-in monitoring. By default, it records submission times, IP addresses, and can log whether a student left the quiz page (tab switching). However, Canvas alone cannot see your screen, monitor your webcam, or detect other applications running on your computer. These capabilities only exist when Canvas is paired with third-party proctoring software like Respondus LockDown Browser, Proctorio, or Honorlock.
This distinction is critical. A Canvas quiz without proctoring software is fundamentally different from one with it. The approach you take depends entirely on which tools your instructor has enabled.
Method 1: Standard Canvas Quizzes (No Proctoring)
If your quiz does not require LockDown Browser or any webcam proctoring, you have significant freedom. Canvas can detect tab switches through its "quiz log" feature, but many instructors do not review these logs. Even when they do, tab switching alone is not definitive evidence of cheating since students regularly switch tabs to check email or messages.
The simplest approach is to use a second device. Open the quiz on your primary laptop and use your phone or a second computer to search for answers. Canvas has zero visibility into what happens on a separate device. This method has worked since Canvas was first created and still works today.
For essay-type questions within Canvas, you can generate answers using ChatGPT or Claude on your second device and then type them into Canvas in your own words. If the assignment also goes through Turnitin, use our text humanizer first.
Method 2: Canvas with Respondus LockDown Browser
LockDown Browser is a custom browser that prevents you from opening other applications, accessing other websites, or taking screenshots while a quiz is active. It runs in kiosk mode and blocks common keyboard shortcuts like Alt+Tab, Ctrl+C, and Print Screen.
The virtual machine method still works for many configurations. By running LockDown Browser inside a virtual machine (such as VMware or VirtualBox), you can access the host operating system freely while LockDown Browser thinks it controls the entire computer. However, newer versions of Respondus can detect some VM environments, so you may need to use advanced VM cloaking settings.
The second-device method also applies here. LockDown Browser controls your primary computer, but it has no awareness of your phone, tablet, or another laptop sitting beside you. Simply use the second device to look up answers while the quiz is displayed on your locked-down machine.
Method 3: Canvas with Webcam Proctoring
When Respondus Monitor, Proctorio, or Honorlock are enabled, your webcam and microphone are active during the exam. The software records video footage and uses AI to flag suspicious behaviour such as looking away from the screen, talking, or having another person visible in the frame.
This is where digital methods become extremely risky. The webcam can see you looking at a second device. The microphone can pick up audio from a phone. The AI flags any unusual eye movements or head turns for instructor review.
For proctored exams with webcam monitoring, the only reliable method is hardware that is physically invisible to the camera. This means covert earpieces that sit inside the ear canal and cannot be seen, paired with a concealed camera that captures the exam questions without requiring you to hold a device.
Canvas Quiz Logs: What Instructors Actually See
Canvas quiz logs show the timestamp of each answer submission, the time between questions, and browser focus/blur events. An instructor reviewing these logs might notice if you spent an unusually long time on one question (suggesting you were researching) or if you answered questions suspiciously fast (suggesting you had prepared answers). The key is to maintain a natural pacing pattern, spending appropriate time on each question and not answering every single one correctly.
Facing a Proctored Canvas Exam?
When webcams and LockDown Browser are both active, you need hardware that is completely invisible to cameras and operates on a separate network.
